This is a game which has been out for some time and one which I’ve played for a while but not yet wrote about. Its part of the PSN free games this month which i think has helped reinvigorate interest in it, especially at among my circle of friends. While it’s a game I throughly enjoyed I’ve found it difficult to get some of them interested enough to purchase it. Now they have no excuse.
For those who are unfamiliar with the game , it’s a top twin stick shooter. You can play 1 to 4 player co-op. The game is broken up into 3 distinct enemy races which basically inhabit various worlds within the universe each representing various missions. There is varying degree of difficulty within these worlds which determine the value of reward you receive for a successful mission.
When playing online multiplayer each of your wins goes towards an overall community score which if successful in reaching a preset goal within that week means victory for the human race. If not reached it’s a loss. This community dynamic is a touch that’s adds a more dimension to your online play.
Arrowhead Game Studios have done an excellent job of supporting this game since its original release back in March 2015. There have been 2 major DLC release, for free, which have really changed the game, adding new content and even enemy races.
There is a great upgrade system within the game. Your character has multiple attributes which can be upgraded such as weapons, armour and stratagems. These are unique abilities which the player can call in, such as airstrikes, healing drones, mechs and even nuke weapons . These are upgraded by finding resources within the mission maps. It allows for each player to really upgrade their character uniquely to suit your favourite style of play.
One other callout I have to mention is that this is cross play with PS vita and it works really well. You can play online MP with people on PS4and Vita with no issues.
One area which I have always found a bit confusing is the actual online multiplayer lobby section. For me at least it’s a bit un intuitive and sometimes I have trouble joining my friends in a party. If this area could be improved upon it would be make a great game even better.
Its free till the end of February so I’d recommend picking it up for a try. You won’t regret it.
