So I have finally completed Firewatch. I was waiting for the PS4 patch to become available before i dove back in. The patch helped improve, though not eradicate, frame drops and included some other optimisation under the hood. Please note below I reference some minor spoilers within the game and I would avoid further reading until you have completed the game.
My last post finished up just at the end of day 1 within the game. And my initial impressions still lasted throughout the story. I thoroughly enjoyed the story of Firewatch. How it unfolds across the series of days is great and the pacing and connection you create with Henry and also Delia are great. The game follows up on the ominous man that you encounter in Day 1 and this character and story arc is really the struggle that Delia is experiencing throughout the game. Henrys journey starts with his wife and his perceived inability to care for her correctly. As he progresses through the story and you are given dialogue choices that allow you to explore your version of Henry and he he feels for his wife and interacts with with Delia.
One moment that sticks out, a little into the game, is during a day opening sequence you see your wedding ring on the table. I placed the ring on but you don’t have too. Its a great touch that follows you through the game and really lets you explore Henry’s feelings.
The game is relatively short and i would recommend trying to finish it in one or two sittings to reply get the most emotional impact and enjoyment from the game. A word of caution, i’ve read on other reviews that the reviewers felt the game ends rather abruptly , it does but i actually liked this. The story of Henry and his time in the national park is the game and for me the game delivered.
